Icons in iPhone 6 / 6 Plus For iOS 8: The Ultimate Guide

Last updated: March 1, 2015 at 23:37 pm

If you recently bought home a brand new iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 Plus, and you are still figuring out its features, then we have a mini-guide to help you get started. In this how-to tutorial we will explain our simple yet favorite ways to utilize iOS 8’s icons to its full potential.

Note that, we assume, you know how to jailbreak your iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus device, and we also assume you have a basic understanding of using a smartphone. Even if that’s not the case, you will find this article useful as there is something new for everyone here. Let’s get started!

Question: How do I rearrange or delete icons in iOS 8?
Answer: To move an icon to a new page, to the left or right, you have to tap on the icon for a couple of seconds. This will force the icon to wiggle (shake) with “x” mark visible at the top-left. Now, as the icon wiggles, you can move it anywhere you want.

To delete the app or game, click on the “x” mark.

Note that, unlike in Android, you cannot place the icon anywhere you like in iOS 8. By default, Apple aligns each icon next to another icon. And if the page doesn’t have any icons, then the wiggling icon will be automatically placed in the 1st position of that particular page.

Question: How do I move icons into a folder?
Answer: You cannot create an empty folder in iOS 8. Instead, a folder is automatically created when you place one icon on the top of another. So, from your iPhone, tap on any icon, say Settings icon, that you want to move into a folder. Note that at this point we don’t have any folder.

Drag this Settings icon and place it on another one, say, App Store icon. That’s it – a new folder is now created. You can name this folder and add a maximum of 20 apps or games per folder. More: How to Create Folders For iPhone Apps & Games?

Question: How do I set custom icons for folders in iOS 8?
Answer: You can use a free Cydia tweak called FolderIcons. This tweak, available when you type the word “Foldericons” in the search bar, allows you to add a custom icon to the folder.

If you do not like the default folder that shows thumbnails of the apps in it, and want to change the background color, shadow, badge, etc. then Foldericons is what you need.

Question: How do I add more icons to the iPhone dock?
Answer: By default, the bottom part of the iPhone has 4 icons/apps and they can be extended to five using a jailbreaking tweak called “betterFiveIconDock.”

To get started, open Cydia and add the following repo: Next, search for betterFiveIconDock and install this on your iOS device. After restarting Springboard, you will be able to add another icon to your iPhone’s or iPad’s dock.

Question: How do I move the icons down in iPhone 6?
Answer: Apple knew that the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus has bigger screen and it can be difficult to swipe through pages of icons with one hand, which is why they have introduced a new feature called Reachability.

With Reachability option enabled, you can get all the icons to settle down — meaning the top part of the iPhone’s screen will be empty and all the apps and games icons will be visible at the bottom half. More: iPhone 6’s Reachability Option in iOS 8 Explained
