iOS 8 Home Button Bug Opens Multitasking Apps With A Single Press

Last updated: September 28, 2014 at 22:29 pm

Many users are reporting a Home button bug on the new iOS 8 devices. So if you are using iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with iOS 8 installed, there is a good chance this problem exists but you probably haven’t noticed it yet.

What is the problem with Home button, you ask?

Pressing or touching the Home button once should take you to the homescreen, but it doesn’t. Instead, you are taken to the multitasking menu where you can see all the apps running in the background.

We initially assumed this could be a hardware bug or probably some phones had a broken Home button. After talking to a couple of developers and looking at various forums we see the problem is indeed related to iOS 8 software.

Here’s what an iOS developer has to say about this Home button bug:

“Touched the Home button once and a multitasking window appeared. I immediately knew something was wrong with iOS 8.0 update. Fortunately, I don’t have to blame my fingers now.”

Reddit user Sheesh confirms the Home button issue appears after upgrading to iOS 8:

“After I upgraded to iOS 8 on my iPhone 5, sometimes when I single-press the Home button I get the multitasking screen. I’m definitely not double-pressing. Never had any button issues before the upgrade.”

Another user described the problem with Home button on his iPhone:

“iPhone 5 32GB Verizon. I’ll go into an app, then click the home button wanting to go home, and it sends me to the multitask view with the new contacts on the top.”

We are already using iPhones with the latest iOS 8.0 firmware installed, but could not replicate the problem. The Home button works just fine on iPhone 4s and iPhone 5s. Maybe even we failed to notice it? Or is it something that happens infrequently?

If you found a working solution to fix this Home button problem, please drop a comment. We will share it here. And Apple, please fix this problem permanently in the next iOS 8 update, yes?

Update x1: A quick recalibration should fix this Home button issue (as mentioned in the comments). Here is the updated post: How to Recalibrate to fix Home button problem.

Update x2: Many users are still complaining that the Home button problem hasn’t been fixed in iOS 8.0.2 update.

I noticed this two days ago… Home button acts strange like 1 in 50 times. Not a major problem for me though.

    Using iPhone 5s 32gb version.

This fix should work to recalibrate your Home Button:

STEP 1: Open an app. Any default iOS app. (Weather, Clock etc.)
STEP 2: Hold the Sleep/Wake button (Power) till the ‘Slide to power off’ appears.
STEP 3: Now press and hold the home button till the slide goes away and you get to the home screen. Done.
You’ll notice that the app is closed.

This should fix the calibration issues and make the home button work.

I just followed these 3 steps and it seems to work for now. Hopefully that’s it. Thanks!

I have tried the method given above but it did not solve the problem on my iPad mini. Almost in all of the ten times I singlepress the homebutton the recent apps and contacts window appears, and it started after ios 8 update cux I bought ipad like two months ago and it was working perfectly before the update, the homebutton and everything.

I have a 4s 16gb and I have been having the same problem and it hasn’t helped to do the home button calibration. I have done it twice. My home button is constantly bringing up the multi task screen. I was going to buy an iPhone 6 this week but after how badly my phone has been this week after the update, and the way it even lagged a bit before hand, now I’m thinking of getting a Nexus instead. :-/

no, this do not help and fix it. i’m using iphone 5 32 gb, since ios 8, i’ve got the problem. but it’s def. a software bug, nothing to do with hardware.

the new update 8.0.2 do not fix it. what can we do? do anyone got a direct connection to the right place in apple?

  • Israel

    Nope. Does not work

  • Vas

It doesn’t work. F…ing monkeys working in Apple. No good for anything. Now I’ve got quite expensive iphone 5 that glitches all the time and can not be reverted to iOS 7. Thanks apple, you retarded idiots…

A contact appear in the recent contact list above even though he or she was not contacted at all, not even recently or a long while ago. What goes this? Anyone knows?

  • Matt

    IOS 8.0.2
Made home button issue more frequent.

Come on Apple. Did you Hire Microsoft programmers over there?

I have had the same problem on my iPhone 5 running iOS 8. Worse, if you have the triple-click function activated (for instance, if you use the “guided access” feature), one click activates that. Basically it is OFTEN taking me 2-3 clicks to get home. my phone shouldn’t make me feel like I’m stuck in Oz.

I went to the Apple Store and they fixed the issue by replacing the home button with a new one. It’s free if your phone is under warranty and $29 of its not. I had to put a firm foot down to get it for free since this is not a problem I cause but they caused. So the issue is resolved!

I had the issue on an Iphone 5 after installing ios 8.0. Skipped 8.0.1 and installed 8.0.2 problem still remained. Performed recalibration as described above and it seems to have resolved the issue.

Same problem here. Fix did not work.

  • RayL

Calibration does not work for me.

  • UgaDogCH

8.1 squashed the bug. Finally. Was close to leaving Apple if it didn’t.

    It doesn’t work at all

I don’t understand this. First when the iphone 4/4s came out it costs people over 600 Euros. For many of us it was a great event to afford such a new commer. And once we bought it, the device worked almost perfectly (at least for me). Later, after approximately 1 1/2 years, suddenly my power button didn’t function. I wondered how it happened since I hadn’t dropped my phone or so. Then I did some research on the internet and finally a article caught my attention explaining the apple devices have some intern setting which disables the function of the power button after some years leading people to buy a new one compulsively. It was really frustrating that I had to bear the assistive touch since it’s really not practical when you’re not used to it. However, I hadn’t another option because I really did not want to pay over 100 Euros to let the button be fixed by the Apple Store, for me it was not worth it to be honest. Since then I could handle the alternative option of the power button very well until a few days ago a new major problem occured. Suddenly my home button started freaking out. Whenever I want to leave a app and I tap the home button, it brings me to the multitasking page instead of home. The best part of this misery is that now this button does not react by being tapped for once, leading me to tap it a several times to see a difference. Seriously, this is getting more annoying every single day since this problem does not seem to be fixed in any way. All I can do is blaming the useless update of ios 8 and the following. I do not think this just happened by accident because the disabling of the power button did not happen by accident either. I think it’s really an exploitation. Paying so much money for a mobile phone and expecting it to last at least for 2 years is not unrealistic. And yes I know that there are coming up so many new innovations of apple phones like the new “bendable” iphone 6/6s but some people are still able to get along with one of them if it would let that happen.

Update x1 worked for me in following the recalibrate instructions on an iPhone 4s with 8.1.3
