Update 28th August, 2015: This guide is valid for every iOS 8 firmware including iOS 8.1, iOS 8.2, iOS 8.3, iOS 8.4, and iOS 8.4.1.

Are you looking for a method where you can install iOS 8.0 firmware without a computer? If you answered yes, you are going to love this. In this guide, you will discover how to install and update your current iOS firmware to the new iOS 8.0 wirelessly.

Before we go further, it’s important to summarize the steps involved. This will give you a clear idea of what to expect and to see if this method fits your needs. You see, there are people who don’t have access to a computer, and then there are some that always have a computer or laptop around. This technique does not require a PC or a laptop.

Summary of this technique: You will download and install iOS 8.0 firmware right from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch device. This method does not require any special access to any computer. Just a solid Internet connection and lots of free storage space is all you need to update to iOS 8.0 firmware.

Apple devices we used for test install of iOS 8:

  • iPhone 4s
  • iPhone 5
  • iPad mini with Retina display

Apple devices compatible with this installation technique:

  • iPhone 6 Plus, 6, 5s, 5c, 5, 4s
  • iPad 2, 3, 4, iPad mini and iPad Air
  • iPod Touch 5G

  • Working Apple device (any iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch from the above list)
  • Stable internet or WiFi connection

Time: 30 minutes to 2 hours maximum (depending on your Internet speed)

Steps To Perform Wireless OTA Update Without Any iTunes Problems

The most important step in this technique is to have a good Internet connection. You are free to choose any type of connection you want.

In the OTA update process, it does matter whether you have LTE, 4G, 3G connection, or WiFi or direct broadband connection. Faster the Internet connection you have, quicker is the installation iOS 8.0 firmware. To give you an idea, on our slow connection, we received messages like “Update Requested” and “Preparing Update” for more than two hours.

Oh, and there is yet another factor that decides how quickly can you download and install iOS 8.0 firmware on your iPhones, iPads, and iPod Touch. What is it? It’s the Apple server.

You see, whenever you try to download the files from your device, it connects with the Apple server and looks for the proper files to download for your current model. If there are a lot of requests hitting the server, you will be put in a queue. It’s a waiting game.

It can take minutes, or even hours to get iOS 8 files. So you need a combination of good connection and good luck (to make sure Apple’s server are free). All said and done, here is are the exact steps for OTA update:

Step 1: From your device, tap on the Settings icon
Step 2: Go to General
Step 3: Tap on Software Update
Step 4: Tap on “Download and Install”

That’s it? Yep, these are the only four steps you need to execute to start downloading iOS 8.0 files. Best part? You don’t even have to select any IPSW files or connect to your computer, or do any of those file restoring process.

With OTA update, all you have to do is tap and wait for the download process to complete. As soon as the file is downloaded, it will install automatically and the device will reboot.

Here is an example of iPhone 5 after updating from iOS 7.1.2 to iOS 8 firmware:

The screen reads as “Hello” which is a welcome screen after we successfully installed the latest firmware on our device. The next step involves location services, creating passcode, and finally entering Apple ID and password.
