If you are looking for a guide to help you get IPSW files for your device and install it properly, then this is the page you should read. Here, we will teach you all about Apple’s IPSW files, how to pick up the right file, and install it on your Apple device. Before we jump ahead, it is very important to explain the basics of IPSW files.

IPSW file explained: So what’s an IPSW file? And what does IPSW stand for? IPSW stands for “iPhone / iPod Software.” A quick glance at the name and you should get a fair idea that this is a type of firmware file that contains iOS elements.

In short, IPSW file has the power to replace any iOS firmware with a new one. For example, if you have an iPhone running iOS 7.1.2, you can install a new IPSW file on that iPhone to upgrade it from iOS 7 to iOS 8.

IPSW file is used for upgrading (installing), downgrading, and even re-installing the iOS firmware. Now that you know what IPSW really does, the next step is to find out how to use this file to install iOS 8.0 firmware. But first, let’s quickly highlight the method we will be using:

Summary of the technique: First you have to pick the right IPSW file for your device, download that file, and transfer it to your device via Apple iTunes player. This method requires you to manually select files, wait for it to download and then install it on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch.

Apple devices we used for test install of iOS 8:

  • iPad Mini
  • iPad 3
  • iPhone 4s
  • iPhone 5s

Apple devices compatible with this installation technique:

  • iPhone 6 Plus, 6, 5s, 5c, 5, 4s
  • iPad 2, 3, 4, iPad mini and iPad Air
  • iPod Touch 5G

Requirements:

  • Working Apple device (any iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch from the above list)
  • USB cable for connecting device to a computer
  • Latest Apple iTunes player
  • Computer (preferably with Windows or Mac operating system)
  • Stable Internet connection

Time: 2-4 hours maximum (depending on your Internet speed)

Tutorial: Installing iOS 8.0 IPSW Files on iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch

We have three steps to perform here. The first step requires you to select the right IPSW file. If you fail to pick the right file, you are essentially putting a wrong iOS firmware on your Apple device. And the second step requires you to check iTunes version. Lastly, third step involves restoring or transferring the IPSW file to your Apple device. Let’s start with the first step:

1. Pick iOS 8.0 IPSW File For Your Apple Model

Step 1: Find out the model of your Apple device
Step 2: Go to our iOS 8 stable firmware page
Step 3: Select the iOS firmware you want to download
Step 4: Click on the “Download Links” section
Step 5: Download the correct IPSW file on your computer

Before we go any further, let me explain each of these steps clearly.

The first step requires you to obtain the model of your Apple device. How do you do that? We have written an article that explains how to check model number for iOS 8. Read that article and get the model number.

Next step requires you to head over to our iOS 8 stable page. You will notice that we regularly update that page with the latest download links. Just go through those technical details and click on the second column in the Download Links section. This will take you to another page wherein you can download the IPSW files.

Example: Say if I want to install iOS 8.4, then to download iOS 8 IPSW files, I will go to the iOS 8.4 Download page and get the firmware file.

2. Check iTunes For Update

Now that you have downloaded IPSW file of iOS 8 firmware, it is very important to make sure your computer has the latest iTunes firmware installed. Here is what you should do:

Step 1: Open iTunes player
Step 2: Go to File -> About iTunes
Step 3: If you have iTunes 11.4, skip to the next section
Step 4: If you have an older iTunes player, go to iTunes menu
Step 5: Select “Check For Updates”

A new window will pop up: “A new version of iTunes (11.4) is available. Would you like to download it now?”

Click the “Download iTunes” button to start downloading new iTunes software. You may be directed to the Mac App Store (on Mac) or the Apple’s website (on Windows) to download iTunes 11.4 player. Set it up and move to the final step.

3. Transfer iOS 8 IPSW Files Via iTunes

It is in this step that many of us run into problems. We are going to pick the IPSW files from step 1 and transfer that file to our device. Here are the steps to follow:

Step 1: Open iTunes player
Step 2: Connect Apple device to your computer via USB cable
Step 3: Go to iTunes and select your device from the left sidebar
Step 4: Click on “Restore” and shortcut keys (explained below)
Step 5: Select the IPSW file and wait for the installation to complete

Wait. The fourth step is very important. Hold Alt key (on Mac) or Shift key (on Windows) and click on the “Restore” button from your iTunes. This will open a new window giving you the option to select a file. In this case, you will have to select the IPSW file that you have recently downloaded.

After selecting this file, Apple iTunes software will install it on your device. The complete installation process should take 20 to 30 minutes, depending on the iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch model you own.
