App Store “Could Not Sign In” Error Message in iOS 8 [Fix]

Complete error message: “Could Not Sign In. An Unknown Error Has Occurred.”

On iPhone and iPad, an error appears in your iTunes App Store after applying iOS 8 update.

When It Happens: Even if you are logged into your Apple account (after the iOS 8 installation process), you will still get the sign in error message. Recreate this problem, if you want, by visiting the App Store and trying to download an iOS app.

Many Apple users have tried but failed to purchase iOS apps, which ultimately led to “Could Not Sign In” message on their screen.

Fix App Store Sign In Problem With These Two Methods

To fix the “Could Not Sign In” error permanently, you have to follow any one of the two methods listed below. The first method requires you to change the payment information of your Apple account, and the second method requires you to sign out and sign back in.

Method 1: Change Payment Information From Apple ID Settings

Note that you will be re-entering the security code of your credit card in this method.

  • Open Settings and go to iTunes & App Store
  • Tap on Apple ID – this brings up a menu
  • Tap on View Apple ID and go to Payment Information
  • Change the security code of the linked credit card

After completing the above steps, click on the Home button to go back. Now, open App Store — you will be able to download apps without any problem and without the unknown sign in error message.

Method 2: Log out From Your Apple Account

Note that you should remember password of your Apple acount in this method. We are essentially signing out and signing back in. Compared to Method 1, we have less number of steps to follow.

  • Open Settings and go to iTunes & App Store
  • Tap on Apple ID, then on Sign Out
  • Now login again with your Apple password

After logging in, you can go back to the App Store to download free or paid apps and games.

Remember: You may get a “Cannot connect to the iTunes Store” message. To fix this problem, please make sure you have a stable Internet connection. It is also recommended (but optional) that your iPhone & iPad is on a good network (3G/4G/LTE) to avoid getting a blank page in the App Store.
