Let’s accept it: If you are trying to download iOS 8.0 firmware on your Apple device, you may face a couple of problems. Some issues are what we call major, and some just minor.
Here are two more minor problems we faced while trying to update to iOS 8.0 firmware.
Message “Update Requested” appears right when we try to install iOS 8.0 using the Software Update option available in the Settings area.
Message “Preparing Update…” appears in a similar fashion. We went to the Software Update section and did an OTA update for iOS 8.
We invested our time waiting for the problem to automatically disappear. And it was right there. For hours.
Question is: Can we get rid of this problem? Do we have a solution that solves this problem permanently?
How To Fix Update Requested And Preparing Update Problem Forever!
First, let’s understand (or rather assume) why these problems appear during the iOS 8 download process. We will keep this quick and short.
Whenever a server gets plenty of requests, it will either shut down or stop responding. In this case, Apple received thousands of download requests and some of these requests are acknowledged after some time. Both of these iOS 8 related error messages — Update Requested and Preparing Update — are a clear indication of issues from the Apple side.
It does not have to do with your WiFi or Internet connection.
And it certainly does not mean you cannot install iOS 8 firmware on your iPhones, iPads, and iPod Touches.
We have solution that worked for us. It is a bit silly, but if you are “stuck” at the “Update Requested” message for hours, then this is your only option.
Update (June 30th, 2015): Many iOS 8.4 users are getting similar errors – and the post has been updated with more relevant answers.
Solution 1: Delete Beta Seed Profile
From your iPhone or iPad, go to Settings -> General.
Next, select Profiles and delete the “Apple Beta Seed” profile (if it is visible). Now, restart the device and go back to the General -> Software Update.
This will begin downloading the latest iOS 8 firmware right away.
Solution 2: Install iOS 8 Manually
Here’s what happened with us: On our iPhone 5s, we received the Update Requested message. We waited for two hours for the message to disappear, but it never did.
Solution? We used another method to install iOS 8 firmware. Rather than wait, we downloaded the proper IPSW file from the Apple’s server. Next, we connected iPhone to iTunes and transferred IPSW file using the “Restore” option.
You can download IPSW files of iOS 8 stable version from here.
Note: Hold Alt key (on Mac) or Shift key (on Windows) and click on the “Restore” button from your iTunes. This opens a new Window wherein you have to select the downloaded IPSW file.
