Disable Game Center Notification, Welcome Back Popup Message in iOS 8

Last updated: September 28, 2014 at 19:34 pm

Whenever you open any game from your iPhone or iPad, you will receive a welcome notification message from the Game Center app. Now, this tiny welcome banner at the top of the screen (which says: “Welcome Back, iOS8Release”) stops you from accessing the game menu for a couple of seconds. To enjoy playing the game, you have to wait until the banner fades away.

This can be truly annoying. Plus, some of us never really use Game Center on our devices. And that is why it is better to remove it, right?

But The Default iOS Apps Like Apple Game Center Cannot Be Removed

If you remember, you cannot delete Tips app from iOS 8 (you can only hide it). None of the default iOS apps can be erased from the device, which leaves us with two options: to stop the Game Center notification and to hide the app.

You can hide Game Center in some folder, but that doesn’t solve the “welcome back” banner that pops up frequently. What you really need to do is turn OFF the notification, so that Game Center never shows you any message.

Solution: Stop Game Center Notification in iOS 8 By Logging Out

Note that Apple hasn’t given its users any option to disable Game Center notification from the Notification Center. There is no tap this, tap that buttons. We do have “workaround” that works.

The method requires you to logout from your Game Center account. As you probably know, Game Center is linked to your Apple account and if you are not logged in, you will never receive any notifications or alerts.

Steps to Follow:

  • Select the Settings icon
  • Scroll to find “Game Center”
  • Click the Apple ID
  • Tap on Sign Out button
Turning OFF Game Center notifications by logging out of Apple account

That’s all you have to do to logout from Game Center.

Now, remember that next time you open an app, you will still be asked to sign back in, ignore it every time and the Game Center app will eventually stop sending welcome back alerts.

Alternate method for the future: We have one more Game Center fix that involves you to jailbreak the device and use a Cydia tweak. You know that iOS 8 doesn’t have any jailbreak, so we will skip explaining this method to you. Just in case, for future reference, the name of the tweak is “DisableWelcomeBanner” — install it from the Kinchan’s repo on iPhones and iPads running iOS 7 to permanently disable every Game Center notifications.

Actually you do. You get a screen covering “Login please” panel that you have to cancel out of.

What’s the solution when you don’t have a Game Center account? I’ve never created one, yet I get the pop up all the time.
