Disable Facebook Messenger Notifications in iPhone / iPad

Last updated: August 25, 2015 at 23:17 pm

If you are like me, and if you use Facebook and its Messenger almost everyday, then you will hate the notification that pops up on your iPhone’s or iPad’s screen.

Such notification pop up – either on the top of the screen or in the middle of the lock screen – appears every time your Facebook friend(s) sends you a private messages. And we all know these notifications can be incredibly annoying if you have many friends or that one friend who wants to talk to you because he/she is “free.”

For that reason, it’s best to disable Facebook notifications from your iOS device permanently. And that is why we have written this simple guide to help you stop unwanted notifications forever.

How to Stop Notification Pop ups in Facebook Messenger

There are two ways to do it: One, you want to stop these Messenger notifications for x amount of time, in which case you can use the FB Messenger app. Second, you can permanently stop notifications from your device’s settings. Both the methods are explained in detail below:

Method #1: Disable Notifications For A Certain Time

If you open the Facebook Messenger app on your iPhone / iPad, and go the Settings menu – you will notice that the Notifications are turned ON by default. You cannot turn them OFF from here. Note: If Notifications are turned OFF – you won’t receive pop up messages anymore.

In such cases, what you can do is disable the notification for a certain time period. Just tap on Notifications and you will get this pop up menu:

From the four options – Turn off for 15 min, 1 hr, 8 hr, 24 hr – select any one. If you select 24 hr, you won’t get any notification bar for the next one day!

Of course, this is useful only when you are in school, college, or busy in your office meeting and don’t want to hear the beep sound the Messenger app makes. And what if you want to permanently disable these notifications? Follow the second method…

Method #2: Disable Notifications From iOS Settings

In this method, you are going to use the internal settings accessible from your iPhone / iPad. Assuming you are using iOS 8.0 or higher firmware with latest version of Facebook Messenger app installed, follow the procedure:

From your iOS device, tap on the Settings -> Notifications. Now tap on Messenger (that has a blue icon to the left). This is what you will see:

In short: The notifications are turned ON! Just toggle the Allow Notifications switch (green turns into white) to disable notifications as shown:

You can also selectively stop the Messenger app from making any sound (mute it by turning off the sound), enable/disable the badge app icon or put an end to the lock screen notifications forever.

That’s it! Facebook Messenger app will never bother you, or invade your screen, when you follow the two methods listed above!
