As the new Apple Music is on its way, many iTunes Match subscribers are worried if they actually need this service on their iPads and iPhones.
If you are one of them and you don’t want to use the iTunes Match service anymore (membership costs $24.99 per year), then this detailed guide should be useful.
In this article, you will learn all you need to know about iTunes Match subscription – from refunds to expiration and cancellation of your yearly membership account. Before we dig further, it is important to mention something far more important…
When You Cancel Your iTunes Match – Your Music is Gone Forever!
Note that iTunes Match is not a backup service. Yes, it uploads all your music to the cloud and stores them, then mix-and-matches them with music libraries, but it can never be your backup service. If you did not backup your music on your computer or external hard drive, it’s time to do so.
Because once you cancel your iTunes Match account, all your music / playlists will be deleted. Only music you have purchased from iTunes Store will be available for re-download.
Rest of the imported songs? You can’t restore or recover them anymore. And this leads to another important point…
What About Refund in iTunes Match?
If you subscribed to iTunes Match, say in 2015, and you decide to cancel it right away (without even using the service for one year) there will be no refunds.
As far as I know, you can’t redeem or claim any money for unused service. Once you have paid $25 per year, that money is gone – whether you use iTunes Match or let it expire.
You can, however, file a case or talk to any Apple representative stating your dissatisfaction against iTunes Match and see if you can claim the full refund.
Is there Anything Like “Deleting” iTunes Match Account?
I have talked to an Apple representative, asking if there is any way to permanently delete an iTunes Match account.
To confirm my understanding, you are concerned about permanently deleting or canceling iTunes Match account. I realize how important it is for you to have clarification on this. I will be happy to look into this issue for you.
I would like to inform you that you need to go to Settings -> Music -> iTunes Match. Look for the relevant options from there.
Pretty standard answer, right? This is the only way to do it. More explanation here:
How to Cancel iTunes Match Membership Right Now!
When you decide to cancel the iTunes Match account, your credit card will not be billed next year. Basically, you are going to switch off the auto-renewal scheme – so your money is safe with you and no unexpected charges will be applied in the future.
Here are the most easiest ways to cancel your iTunes Match membership:
Solution 1: Turn OFF iTunes Match
First, as an active iTunes Match subscriber, you have to take your Apple iPhone / iPad and go to the Settings menu.
From there, tap on the reddish-pink Music icon and look for iTunes Match.
If the iTunes Match is green – your subscription is active (enabled).
If the iTunes Match is not green – your subscription is inactive (disabled).
In this case, to cancel your account, you have to disable iTunes Match by toggling the switch. When it is not green, you have successfully deactivated your iTunes Match account.
Note: Remember that all your tracks, high-quality music, every song you have uploaded and imported to the cloud will be gone forever!
Solution 2: Used PayPal to pay? Then Cancel Subscription
Instead of using credit card for iTunes Match auto-renewal, if you used PayPal service – then you can immediately stop the recurring payment option so next year iTunes Match cannot auto-renew (and bill you $25).
PayPal has this option that allows you to cancel the subscription quickly and easily. Just follow these steps:
- Log in to your PayPal account.
- Click the ‘Settings’ icon at the top of the page.
- Under ‘Payment settings’, click Pre-approved payments..
- Use the filter to select the seller whose agreement you want to cancel and click Cancel.
- Click Cancel Profile to confirm your request.

Solution 3: Contact Apple Support For Cancellation
Want a better and safe solution? Then contact the iTunes Store support staff. You can go to this page – Expresslane Apple (select iTunes) – and contact the support team.
In your message, let them know that you would like to stop iTunes Match subscription right now, and pass your Apple ID along with this message.
Here’s a sample email you could use (and tweak it further if you want):
My name is Sid and here’s my Apple ID: email@example.com
I have been subscribed to iTunes Match for x months, and now I would like to cancel the subscription forever.
Can you please do this? I don’t want to use iTunes Match anymore.
Appreciate your help.
Let me know if there is anything else I need to do.
Once again, it is important to repeat that you will lose access to all your music in the cloud after canceling the subscription. If you are planning to switch from iTunes Match to Apple Music, I suggest you to wait and use both the music services (as Apple Music is free for 90 days starting from June 30th, 2015).
But if you find iTunes Match messing up with your songs, adding useless tracks, converting quality of the songs you have imported into something terrible, then go ahead and cancel the account using any of the methods listed above.
