Ultimate Guide For Replacing Broken iPhone Screen in India

Last updated: August 28, 2015 at 22:24 pm

We have been thinking to write this post for sometime now, because when the iPhones kisses the floor from a certain height, it leaves you with two things: a broken screen and a broken heart.

And that doesn’t feel good at all. We understand.

Several iOS users with broken iPhone screen are looking for solutions, going to the forums, and asking questions in search of any quick fix that will help them replace their iPhone’s screen. And there are other iOS users that go to the local store for screen replacement without any idea.

That is why we have written this article for the Indian audience, to explain more on fixing the broken screen — what to do if the broken iPhone screen is under warranty, and what to do if it is not. Let’s get started. Just remember…

Broken iPhone Screen Has No Warranty

That’s right! Let’s say you have purchased a brand new iPhone 6 Plus yesterday and today the device slips from your hand and lands on the floor.

Screen cracks.

And that is an “external” damage. Apple or its resellers will not cover external screen damage even though the device is under warranty, which brings us to our main point:

If your iPhone’s screen is damaged, you MUST pay. There is no free route here, unfortunately (exceptions are rare and we talk about that later).

Even if there are slight scratches or heavy cracks on the screen – one has to pay for getting the front retina panel replaced.

But Pay Who?

This is where your decision is important. You have two options here:

  • Get the screen replaced from Apple (or resellers)
  • Get the screen replaced from your local repair center

Head over to the nearest Apple store (only resellers) in India and ask for the replacement price. You will be surprised. From our research: Here are the standard pricing for a replacing a broken screen:

  • iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus: Rs. 22000 to Rs. 25000
  • iPhone 5 and iPhone 5S: Rs. 10000 to Rs. 11000
  • iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S: Rs. 1000 to Rs. 11000

In the US, however, Apple Store (depending on the store) replaces the broken screen for free. As posted in Quora:

“Apple Store Stanford mine for free (cited as a “one time exception”). A few weeks later they replaced my coworker’s cracked iPhone for free as well.”

Don’t expect this to happen in India as the official Apple Store doesn’t exist here. We have Apple resellers, like Imagine and Reliance iStore, that will charge you for the screen with the fee we mentioned above.

We have confirmed – nothing is free.

If you have iPhone 5 or older versions, we recommend you to replace the device instead of replacing the screen at these service centres. Why? Because having a new device is a better option than having an old device with a new screen. (And look at the cost of replacement? Very expensive).

But this also leaves you with another option…

Ask Local Repair Centers To Replace Your iPhone’s Screen

In every city these days – be it Bangalore, Chennai, Delhi, Mumbai, etc. – we have these local iPhone repair centers. They will order screens in bulk from the US via eBay and other websites, then replace the cracked screen for a nominal fee.

Of course, Apple doesn’t want you to do that as the company makes no money if you are going to get your screen or accessory from a third-party company. With that said, if there is a reliable iPhone repair center near your area, go ahead and check it out.

Usual cost of replacing the broken screen with a new one will be half of the original amount. So if Apple is charging Rs. 22000 for replacing iPhone 6 Plus’ screen, then local repair center will charge you less than Rs. 11000.

Again, all this depends on the seller.
